Whitfield Profile 20, Profile 30, Cascade Wiring Diagram

Today’s post includes some helpful information about the units and also the wiring diagram for each of the pellet stoves.

The Profile 20 & 30 product lines, as well as the Cascade model, are sheet metal in construction. The Profile 20 & 30 models contain a separate motor for combustion and convection air movement. The Cascade has one motor that drives two fans on a single shaft. All models are top feed, negative pressure combustion units. The Cascade has legs, while the Profile 20 & 30 freestanding models are on a pedestal. Each model contains ash slides and an ash drawer. The Profile 20 & 30 models are fully automatic and come standard with a thermostat and wire.

The Traditions line is a metal firebox housed within a cast body. There are three-baked porcelain enamel styles. They are Mojave Sand, Hunter Green, and Ebony Black. A fourth model is painted black cast. There are two motors for air movement, the combustion motor and convection motor. The top of the appliance directs convection air down to the hearth. These all come with legs and are fully automatic, standard equipped with thermostat and wire. There are ash slides and an ash drawer. A damper control handle is located behind the ash drawer on the right side facing the appliance.

Information such as the Make, Model and Serial Number of your Pellet Stove is crucial to a successful Pellet Stove repair. To Identify your stove you will be looking for a metal plate that is riveted to the back or side of the stove.
In some cases, such as Whitfield pellet stoves the plate is inside the hopper lid.

A Quadrafire pellet stove insert may have the plate on the side so you don’t have to pull the stove completely out of the fireplace. How to Paint Your Stove

Spring is here and it’s time to freshen up things around the house. Several of our customers have asked us for instructions on painting their stoves. We’ve compiled the best steps below. Because of the high temperatures involved, stove paints are formulated to be used in particular ways. This guide contains instructions for proper use of Stove Bright High Temperature Paint. Care in following the steps can help prevent the most common problems.

Most stoves manufactured in the U.S. and Canada can be repainted with the Stove Bright High Temperature Paint without problem. There have been rare instances where the paint formulation of the original equipment manufacturer was not compatible with Stove Bright. Check with your stove manufacturer about the brand of paint used to coat the stove. Then call Stove Bright (1-800-537-7201) to ask about paint compatibility with Stove Bright. Another way to check compatibility is to test spray an area of your stove with Stove Bright to see how it reacts with the original paint.

If the stove paint is not compatible with Stove Bright, or if the stove already has multiple layers of paint, then we strongly recommend removing the paint by sandblasting or sanding down to metal.

There are 3 basic steps to paint your stove or stove pipe with Stove Bright High Temperature Paint:

I. Prepare the surface
II. Apply the paint
III. Cure the paint

The most critical step is surface preparation. The paint will only adhere as well as whatever is already on the stove. If the stove is rusted, and you do not remove all of the rust, then the paint will adhere to the rust and fail. If the stove has a coating that is peeling, blistering, or chalking, then the new topcoat will release from the stove in the same way. If the stove has grease, oil, dirt or any other contaminant on it, then the paint will not adhere to the metal of the stove.

I. Prepare the surface for paint
1. Remove oil, grease, graphite, or other hard to remove contaminants. We have found Lacquer Thinner, Toluene, or Acetone to be effective against the toughest surface contaminants.

WARNING: Lacquer Thinner, Toluene and Acetone are HIGHLY FLAMMABLE. Do not use near open flame or in close proximity to anything that might spark. Turn off all appliances, extinguish pilot lights, and put out all source of flame.

HEALTH WARNING: Lacquer Thinner, Toluene and Acetone give off vapors that are harmful. Do not breathe these vapors. Read and follow all instructions for product use, especially regarding eye protection, skin protection and breathing protection.

2. To remove greasy finger prints, light dirt and dust, or simply for your final wipe down before applying the paint, the easy to use Stove Bright® Paint Prep is a good choice.

3. In any areas where solvents cannot be used in the cleaning process you can use the brand Dirtex in aerosol or the brand Windex.

CAUTION: Do NOT use products like Formula 409 or a tack cloth sold in many paint stores, because these products leave a residue that inhibits the adhesion qualities of Stove Bright® High Temperature Paint.

4. Remove ALL rust. We recommend sandblasting, sanding, or grinding to remove rust.

Extra effort in surface preparation leads to the best chance for a durable, beautiful finish. Trouble-shooting for surface preparation: Paint coming off the surface in large patches indicates a problem with surface preparation. The best remedy is to remove all the paint, prepare the surface again and repaint. If rust is not removed completely before painting, rust will reappear on the newly painted surface over time. Painting over rust with Stove Bright® High Temperature Paint does not stop oxidation. That is why it is critical to remove all of the rust before painting.

II. Apply the paint

The application of Stove Bright High Temperature Paint requires some care to get the best results. There are some common techniques for using any aerosol paint and there are details specific to using Stove Bright in aerosol.

1. Shake the can for 2 minutes to completely mix the paint pigment, metallic and solvents for the best uniform finish when sprayed. Most folks simply don’t shake Stove Bright® long enough.

WARNING: The vapors and propellant coming from the aerosol can are HIGHLY FLAMMABLE. Extinguish all flames and keep away from sources of spark when spraying.

HEALTH WARNING: Vapors are harmful if breathed directly. Use the product in a well-ventilated area. Use eye protection to avoid accidental contact with spray. Wear gloves and appropriate clothing to avoid skin irritation due to contact with the solvents and other chemicals in the paint.

2. BEFORE you spray the paint on the stove or stove pipe note the following:

a. Best results are achieved when the paint, the surface of the stove and the air temperature are above 65° F and below 85°F. You can warm a cold can of paint (from warehouse storage or left in a service truck in cold temperatures) by running hot tap water over it for two minutes. Do not over heat the can or expose it to open flame of any kind.

b. Be sure the area is well-ventilated, that all open flames have been extinguished and that you are wearing appropriate protection for spraying the paint.

c. Test spray on a piece of cardboard to be sure the paint is ready for use. Often the first spray from an aerosol can is mostly propellant with very little pigment. This test spray will bring the well-shaken paint mixture to the tip ready for your first pass on the surface.

3. Two light coats are better than attempting one heavy coat.

4. Paint should be sprayed from about 12 to 18 inches.

5. The paint typically dries to touch in about 20 minutes. When doing two light coats as recommended above, you can apply the second coat after about 15 minutes. The paint will actually “air cure” in about 48 hours. The paint is formulated to be heat cured for the long-lasting, durable, heat-resistant finish you expect from Stove Bright® High Temperature Paint.

Trouble-shooting paint application:
If the paint peels or looks like shattered glass and comes off in thin strips, this is an indication that too much paint was applied. The best remedy for this condition is to remove as much of the paint as possible, wipe down the surface (as described in surface preparation) and repaint; taking care to apply the paint in two light coats while spraying from at least 12 inches from the surface (but not farther than 18” from the surface).

If the finish is textured or gritty, it indicates dry spray occurred during application. This happens when the spray tip is too far from the surface, and the paint actually partially dries in the air before reaching the surface. The best remedy for this condition is to sand off the gritty areas, wipe down the surface (as described in surface preparation) and repaint; taking care to apply a light coat from a distance of less than 18 inches from the surface of the stove (but not closer than 12” from the surface).

III. Cure the paint
1. Build a small kindling fire to start.
2. Add fuel to build a medium size fire to bring the stove surface temperature to about 450 degrees.
3. Keep the medium size fire going for about 60 minutes.
4. For the second stage of curing, add fuel to this fire to make it a very hot fire (surface temperature above 600°F) and keep it at this level for about 45 minutes.

NOTE: During the second higher temperature burn phase there will be some smoke and unpleasant odor. To mitigate this effect, ventilate the room with open windows and doors to provide airflow. The smoke is NOT toxic.

HEALTH WARNING: The smoke from the curing process displaces oxygen. Small children, elderly folks and persons with existing breathing problems should vacate the area during the hot burn to avoid the discomfort of lost oxygen. The smoke is primarily Carbon Dioxide, and therefore nontoxic but uncomfortable.
Trouble-shooting paint curing:
Take care to build slowly to the medium temperature fire. Building a hot fire immediately will shock the paint and cause it to release from the surface. The only remedy to this problem is to remove the paint, prepare the surface for repainting, and repaint.

To avoid problems during the curing process, do not touch the surface with anything until the paint is fully cured. If something touches the surface during the curing process, the remedy is to sand and clean the area and repaint.

Cured paint will be flat in terms of gloss. Many of the colors of Stove Bright® High Temperature Paint contain metallic flake, giving a nice reflective quality to the finish.

Can won’t spray paint? There are several reasons why an aerosol can of paint doesn’t spray:
1. The aerosol tip is clogged with dried paint.
2. Paint pigment has separated from solvent and is clogging the draw tube of the valve.
3. Can is no longer effectively charged with propellant, so there is no pressure to force the paint up through the valve.
4. Paint is old and has separated from the solvent and cannot be re-mixed.

To clear the clogged tip:
a. Be sure paint can is at room temperature (let it sit for several hours in 70 degrees room or place can in hot tap water for 2 to 3 minutes)

b. Shake the can vigorously for at least 90 seconds. This is a long time to shake a can and requires some patience and effort to get the job done.

c. Remove the old regular spray tip and insert the new regular tip (black).

d. Turn the can upside down and spray a test on cardboard if the can sprays, then be sure the spray is clear (only propellant). This will mean your tip is clear and ready for use. If no spray comes out, or if the spray sputters, it indicates a clog in the draw tube.

To clear the draw tube you should:

a. Be sure paint can is at room temperature (let it sit for several hours in 70° room or place can in hot tap water for 2 to 3 minutes)

b. Shake the can vigorously for at least 90 seconds. This is a long time to shake a can and requires some patience and effort to get the job done.

c. Remove the regular spray tip and insert the clear-out tip (green).

d. Spray the paint on test cardboard for several seconds until the paint appears to flow freely.

e. Replace the clear-out tip with a new regular tip.

f. Turn can upside-down and press trigger until no paint comes out (only propellant).

No propellant in the can
a. The easiest test for this is to squeeze the can. If the sides of the can give way easily (like an empty soda pop can) then there is not enough propellant to drive the paint out of the can.

b. See you dealer for a replacement can of paint.

Old paint
a. Look at the bottom of the can for a date and batch number.

b. If the date is more than 3 years past, then it is possible the product is too old.

c. Get a replacement can

How to Troubleshoot a Gas BBQ Grill

Spring is finally here! Time to spruce up the yard and have folks over for outdoor fun. Don’t forget to give a little attention to your gas BBQ grill before you invite the neighborhood over for steaks. We’ve compiled some simple steps to maintaining and troubleshooting your gas barbecue grill. If you find you need parts for your grill, please visit our vast BBQ parts section at A1Stoves.com

Things You’ll Need:
Dish detergent
Air compressor
Screwdriver
Sandpaper

1. Check your propane supply. Turn on the regulator. Look for leaks in the gas line by mixing a few drops of dish detergent with water. Apply this mixture to the gas line and watch for the appearance of bubbles, which indicate a leak in the line. Replace the line.

2. Reset the excess flow regulator. The gas grill’s propane tank regulator may sense the grill is getting too much gas, when it’s actually not getting any gas. Turn the propane valve off. Turn off all the burners on the gas grill. Disconnect the regulator from the tank. Re-connect the regulator and tighten the connections with a wrench. Slowly turn the valve to the “On” position. Turn on a burner and try to ignite it. It should light if that was the problem. If it doesn’t solve the problem, the regulator is bad and you need to replace it.

3. Clean out the venturi tubes on the gas burner if you have a weak, yellow flame. Any small insect or piece of debris can cause the gas not to flow properly. Use an air compressor to blow debris out of the gas burner or wash them out with a hose. Allow them to dry for at least half an hour before trying to relight them if you wash them out. If there is too much build up in the gas burner to clean them, buy replacement burners.

4. Adjust the air control vents located behind the control knobs to get a more uniform blue flame. Use a screwdriver to tighten or loosen the screws to adjust the amount of air to the flame.

5. Clean the igniter if it no longer sparks. Use a piece of fine sandpaper to clean the electrode tip. Check the wiring to make sure it’s intact. Replace an ignitor that still doesn’t set off a spark.

6. Try a different propane tank. Sometimes the problem is the tank and not the gas grill.

Installing a Thermostat

THERMOSTAT INSTALLATION

NOTE: Always disconnect power before performing the thermostat installation

INSTALLATION STEPS
Follow the thermostat manufacturer’s installation procedures

1. Unplug the stove’s power cord from the wall outlet
2. Remove the 6 x 1/4” hex screws from the slotted back access panel
3. Unscrew the control board from the side of the heater (2 x 1/4” hex screws)
4. Unplug the 9 pin wire harness from the back of the board
5. Install the thermostat module by plugging it into the 9 pin plug on the back of the control board
6. Locate the thermostat terminal block marked T’STAT INPUT, found on the back of the module
7. Be sure to run the thermostat wires through one of the slots of the rear access panel before
connecting the wires
8. Connect the 2 wires from your thermostat to the terminals on the module, 1 per terminal. Ensure
the wires are firmly connected
9. Connect the 2 wires at your wall thermostat to their terminals. Ensure the wires are firmly connected
10. Reinstall the 9 pin wire harness to the 9 pin plug now found on the thermostat module
11. Reinstall the control board and the slotted rear access panels
12. Plug in the stove and you are ready to operate with your thermostat

Starting a fire in a wood stove is a considerable undertaking when compared to starting a fire in a gas or oil furnace. They require only turning up the thermostat.

For best results in starting a wood fire, you should have a well-thought-out “standard operating procedure.”

How to start a wood-stove fire

Diligent wood-stove operators have all the necessary firestarting materials readily available at the stove site. Materials include newspaper, 2-inch cardboard strips, kindling, small pieces of cordwood and matches.

Separate four or five full pieces of newspaper. Bunch and compress some newspapers and lay them on the bed of the fire box just in front of the door. Lay a few 2-inch strips of cardboard on top of the newspaper, and place several pieces of small kindling wood or dry bark on top of the cardboard. Finally, place one or two small pieces of cordwood split to about a 2-inch diameter on top of the pile. Open the stove vent as far as it will go and light the fire (Figure 1).

After the cordwood pieces have ignited and burned for several minutes, add one or two larger pieces of wood. It’s a good idea to turn and bunch the burning debris together before adding the larger pieces. Keep the air vents open for several minutes or until the larger pieces are well ignited. Then adjust the vents according to the desired heat output of the stove.

In terms of flammability, cardboard strips about 2 inches wide and 6 to 8 inches long are good materials. You can start most fires without cardboard, but if you have cardboard boxes around the house, this is a useful way to get rid of them. The cardboard cuts up easily if you use a bread knife with a serrated edge. Studies show cardboard probably produces a faster and more positive start up.

Other factors

Exceptions to the standard procedure exist. Most of the factors discussed in the following section apply to conventional airtight wood stoves but not necessarily to stoves with a catalytic combustor.

Experienced and knowledgeable wood-stove operators know they can be confronted with variable factors when starting a fire. Some variables include:

Moisture content of materials used to start a fire. These materials should be as dry as possible. Green kindling will not give you the results you want.
Speed and direction of the wind outside in relation to the chimney. Generally a fairly windy day will create a good “draw” on a properly designed chimney. Sometimes winds are blocked by obstacles such as trees or other buildings. Results are not as good when the wind is blowing from “blocked” directions. On calm days, you may have trouble getting the chimney to draw. (Draw is defined as the movement or flow of air from the inside of the house, through the vent and fire box and up the chimney. Draw is created by physical factors such as differences in pressure or temperature between the fire box and the top of the chimney.)
The temperature difference between the inside of the house and the outside can affect the draw. The greater the difference in temperature, the greater the drawing effect. On a cold day, you can have a temperature effect, even if the wind speed outside is low. On a mild day (outside temperature greater than 32 degrees), the temperature differential will be lower, and the temperature draw effect will be reduced.

You can check the general draw of a stove any time by simply opening the stove door and striking a match. If a good draw exists, the flame will bend toward the fire box and may even be blown out by the strength of the air movement. On the other hand, the match may indicate a negative draw, and the flame will bend away from the fire box. If little or no draw exists, the match will burn easily, and the flame will remain upright.

Difficult situations

We have identified three basic elements that control draw in a wood stove. They, in turn, control the stove’s ability to heat. The elements are:

Dryness and flammability of starting materials.
Outside wind.
Temperature difference, outside to inside.

If the elements are all favorable, you should have no trouble with the draw, assuming the chimney is properly designed and built. If all the elements are unfavorable, it probably would be wise to turn to your alternative heat source on that day. However, if you have no alternate source, you may be forced to try to start a fire under unfavorable conditions.

On a cold, calm day you may find it difficult to light a fire because there’s no wind passing over the top of the chimney. If you were to try the match “flame” test, you may find a negative pressure present. The question is, “How do I start a fire under these conditions?”

We assume you have plenty of dry materials. You must emphasize the large temperature differential between inside and outside temperatures. Remember, hot air rises in a proportionate manner — the greater the temperature differences, the faster the rate of rising.

In this case, rather than trying to start the fire in a conventional way, wad five or six sheets of newspaper and place the wad below the stovepipe leading into the fire box. Ignite it (Figure 2). The paper will burn rapidly, warming the chimney. This creates a positive draw. Quickly add more paper and fine kindling. This heats the chimney more and eventually establishes a favorable situation for a continued fire.

The temperature differential between the inlet air at the vent (assume 70-degrees room temperature) and the temperature at the top of the chimney (assume zero-degrees design temperature) is 70 degrees before the fire is started and is 800 degrees to 1,000 degrees after the fire is established. Once the fire is going and you have accumulated some hot coals, you will find the fire will require more frequent attention on a day of this type.

Other suggestions and strategies

Wood stoves are not good sources of quick heat. Compared with an oil or a gas stove or furnace, a wood stove requires a longer start-up time. Even after a new fire is established in a wood stove, it requires an additional period to heat the stove and accumulate a hot bed of coals. This can be coupled with the fact that wood stoves are usually a “point” source of heat. They often aren’t connected to a duct distribution system, which is usually the case with gas and oil furnace systems.
Wood stoves are not an efficient source of heat for “taking the chill off” cool fall or spring mornings.
Because wood stoves don’t operate efficiently when the draft (oxygen) is cut back (not including stoves with catalytic combustors), large stoves are frequently self-defeating. For a wood fire to burn efficiently and cleanly, it must burn hot most of the time. Many who buy wood stoves think that a larger stove is better. This is not always the case. Stoves burning with the draft turned down are burning at a greatly reduced efficiency — about half the active (hot) burning rate, and most creosote is produced during the low or cold burn stages.
Wood stoves aren’t designed to “hold” a fire. Many people want to “bank” their stoves at night. They slow the fire to smoldering so they can conveniently open the draft in the morning to begin heating the house. A banked stove gives little heat and is not an effective heat source.
Instead of banking a stove at night, allow the fire to die out after everyone in the house goes to bed. In the morning, build a new fire. If you need heat for a short time, use an auxiliary “quick-response” source, such as an oil or natural-gas stove or furnace.
A wood stove is most efficient (efficient and safe) when it is used in cold weather (below 32 degrees and falling) and for longer than one hour. Remember, a wood stove is really a cold-weather heat source. There is nothing scientific about the above temperature and time period. Those are simply suggested levels.
Don’t use petroleum fuels to start a fire in a wood stove. This includes charcoal starters.

Troubleshooting Your Pellet Stove

Even though it’s summer it’s not too early to take a look at your pellet stove and make sure things are working properly. No one wants to be without heat when the cold is upon us! Take a few minutes to fire up that Pellet Stove and should you be experiencing any problems, perhaps the following pellet stove trouble shooting guide will come in handy.

WARNING: Disconnect the electrical cord prior to opening the sides of your stove or opening the exhaust system for any inspection, cleaning, maintenance or service work. NEVER perform any inspection, cleaning, maintenance or service on a HOT STOVE or when the cord is plugged in.

Step 1
Operate the stove in user control mode or increase the set point temperature if the stove power is on but does not fire.

Step 2

Check to see if the hopper is filled with pellets or if the burn pot is dirty. If one of these is not the issue, check to make sure there is a fuel feed or that the exhaust blower snap switch is working.

Step 3

Use the set-up mode feature to reduce the feed rate of a stove that is overheating or starts and runs but then has unburned pellets in the burn pot.

Step 4

Decrease the base feeding rate of the stove in setup mode once a stove is cool if the circulation blower seems to run on high often.

Step 5

Turn off the stove if you smell smoke in the house. Check that the stove has a continuous supply of power since power loss can cause smoke in the home. Inspect the vent and clean if needed. Also check the vent system for leaks. Use high temperature sealant as recommended by the manufacturer to repair the leaks.

Step 6

Increase the stove’s feed rate in the setup mode if the flame goes out at lower feed rates.

Step 7

Contact the manufacturer for an air damper if you have short flame at high pellet feed rates if you have already checked that the feed rate is not too low and have high quality fuel.

Step 8

Start checking the power source for the stove if there is no fuel feed. This is the simplest item to check so verify that the stove is plugged into an electrical outlet. Fill the hopper with pellets if there is still no fuel feed. If the lack of fuel feed problem persists, close the hopper lid if it is open and the burn chamber door.

Step 9

Check the exhaust system and clean if you are unable to find the source of the no fuel feed problem. The exhaust blower may need lubrication and you should consult your stove’s manual on the instructions.

Step 10

Test the auger motor, exhaust blower and vacuum switch for possible jams or failures. Replace these if you cannot find another reason for the fuel feed problem.

CAUTION: The electrical, auger and digital control components of your stove are not owner serviceable. Call your Authorized Dealer for proper diagnosis of problems and service for those components.

DEFINITIONS

ASH
Ash is a natural product of burning wood. As the amount of ash in the wood increases, the amount of ash left behind after burning high-ash wood pellets will increase. High quality pellets will produce less ash and fewer clinkers than lower quality pellets.

CLINKER
Clinkers are solid, glassy or porous accumulations of incombustible matter that may result from burning some types of wood pellets. Clinkers are formed at the bottom of the burn grate and, if left undisturbed, will build up and cut off combustion air. As clinkers grow, the fire becomes orange/brown and ‘lazy’. Pellets may build up in the burn grate, the firebox & window may become sooty, and exhaust gases may become smoky.

FINES
Fines are pieces of sawdust that were not properly formed or are the result of pellets breaking down during handling, transporting and storage. Fines adversely affect the operation and heat production of pellet appliances, and they greatly increase the requirements for general cleaning and maintenance. Fines cause pellets to feed more slowly, thus reducing the amount of heat produced at any given heat setting.

NOTE: It is much easier to remove fines from pellets before they are placed in the stove than it is to service your stove for a plugged hopper, jammed auger or plugged exhaust system. Pellets with excessive sawdust may be screened to remove most of the fines. Pellet screeners may be built or purchased from most pellet stove dealers.

The process does require cautious, informed work , so it is wise to do plenty of reading and consulting on the subject first, to make certain you do it the most effective way.

You’ll want to put all your work material into a bucket or at the very least into some place that you can use as a gathering location for your needs. To Identify your stove you will be looking for a metal plate that is riveted to the back or side of the stove. In some cases, such as Whitfield pellet stoves the plate is inside the hopper lid. A Quadrafire pellet stove insert may have the plate on the side so you don’t have to pull the stove completely out of the fireplace.
Sending a picture of your stove to the techs at A-1 Stoves.com is another way of making sure you are going to be ordering parts for the right stove.

When replacing your auger motor, most stoves follow these simple steps:
* Step 1: Unplug stove. Remove rear access panel to expose the auger motor.
* Step 2: Remove set screw on the bracket.
* Step 3: Loosen set screw on lock collar (do not remove entirely). Gently slide motor backward and away from auger.
* Step 4: Install new motor. IMPORTANT: Make certain that the flat spot on the auger motor shaft (D) lines up with the set screw on the lock collar.
* Step 5: Reseat set screw on the bracket.
* Step 6: Reinstall rear access panel as shown in manual.
* Step 7: Plug in pellet stove.
Another common problem with pellet stoves is that the room air blower (also known as the convection fan) does not come on.
If your convection fan fails to start it does not necessarily mean that the fan itself is faulty.
The room fan is set up so that it only comes on when the stove temperature reaches around 120 degrees so that you are not blowing cold air into the room. This problem is a low cost quick and easy fix with the replacement of your low limit switch.

If you’ve just installed a pellet stove it’s important to get into a regular habit of cleaning and upkeeping it to get the best out of the appliance. The maker’s instructions will give you specifics of what to do. Below are a few general tips and areas to watch out for. If you have questions or need any help, please email us at info@a1stoves.com

Burn pot

The burn pot is the stove’s carburetor, mixing the air and the fuel to enable combustion. As in a car, the correct adjustment of the air and fuel rates is crucial to getting top performance. When your stove is running normally you should see a bright yellow or white flame. You may also notice a white or gray build up of ash on the glass on high burn and a darker fluffy ash on low burn: this is normal. But if the flame is orange and sooty or there’s a build up of a brown caramel-like substance, then you need to take some action because your stove isn’t burning efficiently.

Some stoves are equipped with air dampers or adjustable feed openings that you can adjust yourself. Other models stoves will require adjustment to the control board which may require a qualified technician.

Another problem to watch out for is a buildup of clinkers in the firebox. Clinkers are formed from ash that has melted and then hardened. If ash in the burn pot starts to melt, as it can easily do at the high temperatures reached in modern stoves, then it can block the air holes of the incoming air and upset the mixture of air and fuel. Incorrect adjustment of the air to fuel ratio can greatly increase the likelihood of clinker formation. This is due to the stoves inability to adequately burn the excess fuel and remove the excess ash that is building up in the burn pot. Clinkers are easily removed, even while the stove is in operation, by using the ash tool or rake that comes with your pellet stove.

Ash drawer

Empty the ash drawer before starting a new fire and occasionally by interrupting stove operation. How you need to empty the ash drawer during operation of the stove depends on the type of fuel and the stove design. Typically this will be once or twice a week, but may be monthly in some new designs.

Heat exchanger

Also located in the combustion chamber is the heat exchanger which is designed to transfer the heat being produced by the burning fuel in the burn pot into clean hot air for distribution into the home. This is usually done by a chamber or a series of tubes located in the firebox that the hot air and gases pass over, heating the outside of the chamber before exiting the stove. Fresh air is passed through the inside of the chamber drawing the heat out of the stove and into the room. For maximum efficiency the surface of the heat exchanger should be cleaned regularly. The frequency of these cleanings will depend on your stove design and may range from daily to monthly. Refer to your owner’s manual for cleaning instructions. On some stoves, cleaning is simply a matter of moving a rod that scrapes the tubes inside the stove. Other stoves, however, may require professional service.

Ash traps

These are chambers located behind the fire chamber which prevent excess fly ash in the exhaust from exiting the stove. In some designs they are easily accessed for ash removal by owners. Other designs require professional service.

Glass

Clean with glass cleaner when the glass is completely cool on stoves with effective air wash systems. May require more vigorous methods on others.

Hopper and auger

Check for accumulated sawdust materials (fines). The fuel in the hopper and auger tube should be run out occasionally to prevent auger blockage by fines.

Cleaning the venting system and other difficult components

Most owners have the venting systems of their stoves cleaned by professionals. However, you may want to tackle it yourself if you’re handy, thoroughly knowledgeable, and have the right equipment.

If the vent pipe becomes blocked some smoke may leak into your home. Most pellet burning appliances have a safety switch that will interrupt their operation and keep any exposure to a minimum.

Motors and fans need occasional cleaning and may need lubricating. Using the wrong lubricant or wrong amount of lubricant, however, can damage components. Some components that have to be removed for service need gaskets to be replaced. Gaskets for the fire chamber door, ash pan door, and hopper lid (on some designs) may need replacing occasionally to keep the seals tight.

Troubleshooting

If you notice dirty or sooty burning in the combustion chamber, here are some possible remedies:

* Check the adjustment of air dampers if your stove is so equipped.
* Remove any excess ash, carbon or clinkers from the burn pot.
* Clean any air filters or air inlets to the appliance.
* Remove the burn pot (if possible) and clean the air openings in the burn grate.
* Check the burn pot and burn grate for proper fit and possible air leaks. Many stoves are equipped with gaskets in this area that should also be inspected.
* Check the door and window seals for leaks.
* Clean the firebox and vent ash traps.
* If possible, re-adjust your air and fuel feed rates for a leaner burn. You may need to call in an authorized stove technician to do this.

Safety tips before you light up your fireplace in the cold weather

Cold weather sure makes a fire in the fireplace sound nice, but safety experts want you to take the proper steps before that first flame.

Smoke and flames in Amish country sent Parkman firefighters to a residence on Nash Road.

The homeowner was cooking on a wood stove. Firefighters say when the stove door was open a fire ignited in the chimney.

“Typically when you open it and feed air to an existing fire it takes the heat right up the chimney when it drafts and it will catch the chimney on fire,” Asst. Fire Chuck Dillon said.

Heat in the chimney can catch on fire creosote buildup.

It can happen in stoves, fireplaces, or furnaces that burn solid fuels like wood.

Firefighters recommend you brush out the chimney every two weeks.

At a fireplace store just up the road, owner Martha Bryan recommends a professional cleaning once a year.

Just as important is what kind of wood you burn.

“You can’t burn just anything in your fireplace. You have to burn hard wood, split wood, seasoned wood,” Bryan said.

While northeast Ohio has plenty of pine trees, pine is too soft and spongy to burn.

Experts recommend hickory, oak , and cherry.

Arlington, VA (September 21, 2009) - As temperatures fall and thoughts turn to warding off the approaching cold weather, Americans have more incentive than ever to install a new wood or pellet-burning stove. That’s because homeowners can save significantly thanks to a federal consumer tax credit designed to encourage energy-conscious purchases. It can cover 30 percent of the cost of clean, fuel-efficient stoves and fireplace inserts, up to a maximum credit of $1,500.

“Fall is here, and most families will be looking for ways to cut their home heating bills,” said Jack Goldman, president of the Hearth, Patio & Barbecue Association (HPBA). “Fireplaces and stoves have always been a great option for saving money because they reduce energy costs and add value to homes. But with this new tax credit, there’s never been a better time to buy.”

How it Works
The tax credit – which can lower your tax bill on a dollar-for-dollar basis – applies to stoves or fireplace inserts purchased between January 1, 2009 and December 31, 2010 that:

Burn a biomass fuel source like wood or renewable pellets
Will be installed during the eligibility period in an existing principal residence, not a newly constructed house or vacation home
Meet a minimum 75% efficiency rating as certified by the manufacturer

Purchasers of qualifying stoves and inserts can claim the credit on their federal tax return. These consumers should save their receipt and the manufacturer’s certification that states the appliance they purchased is eligible. Installation and venting costs are included in calculating the credit’s total value, as long as professional installation is required for the proper and safe operation of the stove.

A major reason for accelerated vent corrosion from burning corn is due to acidic condensate forming in the system. When operating your corn-burning appliance, always follow the appliance manufacturer’s installation and operating instructions. In addition, Simpson Dura-Vent offers these recommendations to help minimize condensate formation in the vent.

Fuel: Be sure to follow the recommendations of the appliance manufacturer for the type of corn fuel to use. However, the moisture content of corn contributes significantly to condensate in the vent. The lower the moisture content of the corn, the less condensate you are likely to have in the vent. While corn with a moisture content of 15% may be allowed in the appliance, using a fuel with lower moisture content will help reduce condensate formation.

Vent Runs: Condensate is more likely to form in longer vents because the exhaust temperature cools further away from the appliance. If the exhaust cools to a certain point, moisture in the exhaust condenses in the vent, which can lead to accelerated vent corrosion. Keep the vent for corn-burning appliances short wherever possible to maintain hot flue gas temperatures and keep moisture suspended in the exhaust. If a longer horizontal vent or taller vertical vent is needed, it is recommended that the vent run inside the building envelope or inside a chase enclosure to minimize the vent’s exposure to cold temperatures. Be sure to follow all-applicable building codes and the requirements of the vent and appliance manufacturers.

Appliance Operation: Always operate your appliance in accordance with the appliance manufacturer’s recommendations. However, operating the appliance at its lowest setting has a greater chance for condensate to form in the vent due to the low exhaust temperature. In order to help reduce condensate from forming inside the vent system, operate the appliance at higher temperatures when colder weather is encountered. Higher operation settings provide for warmer flue temperatures, which help to keep moisture suspended in the flue gases.

Inspection and Maintenance: When burning corn, be sure to inspect the appliance and vent often to determine if there has been any corrosion or damage to the system. Be sure to keep the venting system clean, including the tee cap (if applicable). The ash that results from burning corn can trap condensate in the tee cap and inside the vent, hastening corrosion to the system if left unchecked.

Summer’s almost over and now is the time to get your Pellet Stove in tip top shape for the cold nights ahead.

If you’ve just installed a pellet stove it’s important to get into a regular habit of cleaning and upkeeping it to get the best out of the appliance. The maker’s instructions will give you specifics of what to do. Below are a few general tips and areas to watch out for.
Before you even start, you’ll want to have your Owners Manual Handy. Grab a few hand tools and let’s get started.

Burn Pot

Check the burn pot every day and clean it periodically to keep the air inlets open. How often you need to clean the burn pot depends on the type and grade of fuel you’re using. Check your manual for details. The burn pot is the stove’s carburetor, mixing the air and the fuel to enable combustion. As in a car, the correct adjustment of the air and fuel rates is crucial to getting top performance. When your stove is running normally you should see a bright yellow or white flame. You may also notice a white or gray build up of ash on the glass on high burn and a darker fluffy ash on low burn: this is normal. But if the flame is orange and sooty or there’s a build up of a brown caramel-like substance, then you need to take some action because your stove isn’t burning efficiently.
Some stoves are equipped with air dampers or adjustable feed openings that you can adjust yourself. Other models stoves will require adjustment to the control board which may require a qualified technician. Another problem to watch out for is a buildup of clinkers in the firebox. Clinkers are formed from ash that has melted and then hardened. If ash in the burn pot starts to melt, as it can easily do at the high temperatures reached in modern stoves, then it can block the air holes of the incoming air and upset the mixture of air and fuel. Incorrect adjustment of the air to fuel ratio can greatly increase the likelihood of clinker formation. This is due to the stoves inability to adequately burn the excess fuel and remove the excess ash that is building up in the burn pot. Clinkers are easily removed, even while the stove is in operation, by using the ash tool or rake that comes with your pellet stove.

Most pellet burning appliances have a safety switch that will interrupt their operation and keep any exposure to a minimum. Motors and fans need occasional cleaning and may need lubricating. Using the wrong lubricant or wrong amount of lubricant, however, can damage components. Some components that have to be removed for service need gaskets to be replaced. Gaskets for the fire chamber door, ash pan door, and hopper lid (on some designs) may need replacing occasionally to keep the seals tight.

Troubleshooting
If you notice dirty or sooty burning in the combustion chamber, here are some possible remedies:
Check the adjustment of air dampers if your stove is so equipped.
Remove any excess ash, carbon or clinkers from the burn pot.
Clean any air filters or air inlets to the appliance.
Remove the burn pot (if possible) and clean the air openings in the burn grate.
Check the burn pot and burn grate for proper fit and possible air leaks. Many stoves are equipped with gaskets in this area that should also be inspected.
Check the door and window seals for leaks.
Clean the firebox and vent ash traps.
If possible, re-adjust your air and fuel feed rates for a leaner burn. You may need to call in an authorized stove technician to do this.

Professional Cleaning and Maintenance
Most pellet stove owners use professional service for cleaning and preventive maintenance on at least an annual basis. Many dealers offer service plans that offer reduced costs and convenient scheduling. Cleaning and maintenance services usually performed include:
Emptying ash traps and cleaning exhaust passages behind the fire chamber.
Cleaning and lubricating fans and motors.
Cleaning the hopper and fuel feed system.
Cleaning the heat exchanger system.
Cleaning exhaust pipes and resealing the venting system if needed.
Verifying and adjusting the stove settings with proper gauges and meters.
Mechanical and electric components may eventually wear out and need repair or replacement.
Finding competent in-home service should really be part of the buying decision, since service is needed at least on an annual basis. Many stove shops and service technicians offer a service plan that specifies a service schedule, what is covered, travel costs, and other details.
